LIVE: State funeral former President Jimmy Carter
GEORGIA − The solemn sound of a bell ringing out 39 times broke the quiet stillness of a chilly January morning in rural Georgia at the boyhood home of former President Jimmy Carter on Saturday.
It was one of many tributes to the late 39th president of the United States as Carter's funeral motorcade traveled Georgia's roads. The motorcade started Saturday morning in South Georgia, where he was born and raised and owned a peanut farm in Plains. From there, his remains are traveling to Atlanta.
The U.S. will pay respects to Carter, who passed away last Sunday at 100 years old, over six days of funeral events.
On Saturday, the motorcade will stop at the state Capitol before an evening service at the Carter Center. The late president and his family will travel to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.
